FROM THE OFFICE OF CONGRESSMAN DEREK KILMER

Representing Washington’s 6th District

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE   CONTACT: Stephen Carter      March 15, 2013                                          (202) 225-3459

Kilmer Letter Calls on Speaker Boehner to Work With Delegation to Replace Across-the-Board Cuts

In his ongoing efforts to replace the across-the-board cuts and reduce the harm they will cause to his region, Representative Derek Kilmer today sent a letter to Speaker John Boehner highlighting the pain to Washington State and the Navy and calling on Speaker Boehner to come to the table to work on a solution.  Representative Kilmer was joined in signing the letter by several members of the Washington delegation including Representative Adam Smith, the Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Committee.

In the letter, Kilmer and the other Representatives from Washington explain the potential damage these cuts will cause to Washington State jobs and middle class workers, Navy readiness, and the long-term impact to the American taxpayer.  They write, “We do not accept the status quo that Washington is broken. We urge you to come to the table to work with us on this.  We came here to solve problems for our constituents and we will work with you day and night until we find a balanced, long-term solution to replace these mindless cuts.”

From day one, Representative Kilmer has called on Congress to stop the across-the-board cuts and replace them with a balanced, long-term solution to our economic problems.  In addition to speaking about this on the House floor, Representative Kilmer has also published an op-ed in the Kitsap Sun and held roundtable meetings with those who could be affected by the cuts.  The morning the cuts took effect, Representative Kilmer stood outside the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard gate to speak with shipyard workers who may be furloughed because of these cuts.

PSNBA Press Release!                 February 18, 2013

For Immediate Release!                        POC: Carol Evanoff, PSNBA President

                                                                 Tel: 360-961-6592

Due to the current grid-lock in Washington D.C., Puget Sound Naval Base Association (PSNBA) has regretfully decided to forgo their annual trek to D.C.   For 67 years PSNBA has been advocating for the Navy in Kitsap County, for those who serve, their families and our economy.   Nearly every year since 1946 the non-profit group has accomplished this by sending a delegation to the Pentagon to meet with Navy leadership and to the “Hill” to meet with federal politicians.  But Kitsap County is facing a “Perfect Storm” of circumstances that has changed and will likely continue to change how people in the County will be doing business, including PSNBA.  “The cumulative effects of the Recession, the Continuing Resolution, in addition to possible  Sequestration, will touch almost every household in Kitsap County”, predicts Carol Evanoff, PSNBA’s  President.

Unfortunately, the numbers appear to support Evanoff.  With 54% of  Kitsap  County’s economic activity and almost a third of its payroll stemming from the Military, it is easy to conclude that losing $339 million from the Continuing Resolution in the Pacific Northwest Region  will have a crippling affect on an already weakened local economy.   With the potential of an additional loss of $32 million in furloughs, it’s anybody’s guess how far reaching the impacts will be.  A 2011 George Mason University study states that for each job lost by a DOD prime contractor and/or supplier, three additional jobs would be lost in other sectors of the economy.

PSNBA Ambassador, Guy Stitt, reported from his recent business trip to D.C., “It’s pretty ugly back there- we would be wasting our time.  We need to engage our community and our local elected officials.”  Evanoff agrees, chiming in at a recent PSNBA strategy meeting with, “We need to change how we do things, with the support of everyone who lives in Kitsap County. This needs to be a community effort.”

To that end, PSNBA is asking everyone in Kitsap, to do the following:
